Goom, Donnelly and Brockwell 2019, returning to running postnatal

Goom T, Donnelly G, Brockwell E (2019), “Returning to running postnatal – guidelines for medical, health and fitness professionals managing this population”. A freely available clinical guideline, first released March 2019, written by a physiotherapist and two pelvic-health physiotherapists. It recommends no return to running before about 12 weeks postpartum, and a criteria-based screen of pelvic-floor and abdominal recovery, load and strength tolerance, and impact and symptom monitoring before resuming impact, regardless of delivery mode. It has been widely adopted internationally. A clinical guideline drawing on the authors’ synthesis of the literature and practice rather than a randomised trial; its specific timelines and screens are expert consensus.
