Lloyd et al. 2014, position statement on youth resistance training
International consensus position statement on resistance training for children and adolescents (Lloyd RS, Faigenbaum AD, Stone MH et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine 2014;48(7):498-505, DOI 10.1136/bjsports-2013-092952). Adapted from the UK Strength and Conditioning Association position and reviewed by leading bodies in sports medicine, exercise science and paediatrics. It concludes that well-supervised, appropriately prescribed resistance training is safe and beneficial for youth, improving strength, motor skill, bone health and injury resilience, and that it does not damage growth plates or stunt growth. Strong as an endorsed multi-organisation consensus; rests largely on controlled trials and reviews in youth populations.
