Menz et al. 2016, rocker-sole footwear and the first MTP joint
Arthritis Care & Research study of prefabricated foot orthoses and rocker-sole footwear in people with osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (big-toe) joint. The rocker-sole footwear reduced loading at the first MTP joint, lowering the peak dorsiflexion moment and forefoot plantar pressure there. A clinical example of sole geometry being used to offload a painful forefoot structure.
