Parr et al. 2014, Alcohol impairs post-exercise myofibrillar protein synthesis

Crossover trial in 8 active men after concurrent (resistance plus cycling) training. Versus protein alone, myofibrillar protein synthesis fell 24% when alcohol (1.5 g/kg, ~12 drinks) was co-ingested with protein and 37% when alcohol was taken with carbohydrate. Protein blunts but does not abolish alcohol’s suppression of the anabolic response. PLoS One 9(2):e88384; DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0088384. Moderate (small, male-only, single high dose).
