Shaw et al. 2017, vitamin C-enriched gelatin and collagen synthesis

Shaw G, Lee-Barthel A, Ross MLR, Wang B, Baar K. “Vitamin C-enriched gelatin supplementation before intermittent activity augments collagen synthesis.” American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2017;105(1):136-143. DOI: 10.3945/ajcn.116.138594.

Randomised, double-blind, crossover trial in eight healthy men. Subjects took placebo, 5 g or 15 g of vitamin-C-enriched gelatin one hour before a 6-minute bout of rope-skipping. The 15 g dose roughly doubled blood markers of collagen synthesis (amino-terminal propeptide of collagen I, PINP) over placebo, and serum taken an hour after the 15 g dose increased collagen content and mechanical strength in an engineered ligament model in a dose-dependent way. Proof of concept, not an injury-outcome trial; limited.
