Hyldahl, Chen & Nosaka 2017, the repeated bout effect

Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews paper on the repeated bout effect: a single bout of eccentric exercise protects the muscle against damage and soreness from subsequent similar bouts, with the protection lasting weeks to months. The proposed mechanisms act in concert: neural adaptations, changes to muscle mechanical properties, remodelling of the extracellular matrix, and cellular and molecular signalling. The protection is not explained by a reduced inflammatory response.
